Not so obvious down sides of being an authorized user.

Being an authorized user is not always a good thing.

Yes, adding yourself to a credit card as an authorized user can have many benefits. Being an authorized user can increase your credit score by decreasing your debt to credit ratio, it can diversify your types of credit used, it can add payment history to your credit file, etc.  You can do this by asking a friend or family member to add you as an authorized user or you could purchase authorized user accounts to be adding to your credit report from a company.  But, that’s all the good stuff. Let’s talk about the down side to being an authorized user.

Let’s start with the obvious issues with authorized user accounts.

So, let’s say you add yourself as an authorized user. In a perfect world, you’re going to be better off. But, we’re not in a perfect world. So, what can go wrong? Some of the more obvious problems could be that the primary user misses a payment. In this case, you could suffer the consequences of their irresponsibility in the form of a late payment on your credit report. Luckily, it’s much easier to remove this from your report than theirs. Another obvious down side is the primary user maxing our their card. This could result in a high debt to credit ratio and could decrease your credit score.

So, what are the not-so-obvious down sides to being an authorized user?

Fraud. That’s an alarming and bold statement, so let me explain. As it relates to fraud: Let’s say you purchase a trade line from a sketchy company engaged in all sorts of too-good-to-be-true credit techniques and funding efforts. Well, if there is fraud involved in their practice, these alerts from creditors or the credit bureaus can link to you through your authorized user relationship.
